Later on, say after the independence of India in the year 1947, Chennai became a part of Tamil Nadu state of Independent India. At that time the name of Chennai was Madras. The independent government of free and democratic India named Chennai ( the then Madras) is one of the four metropolitan cities of the country. This is just after New Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta. Now the capital city of Tamil Nadu state of India is Chennai.
The name ‘Chennai’ had been derived from the name ‘ Chennapatnam’. It is the name of the town, which was born near Fort Saint George, which was built by the Britishers way back in the year 1640. The name of the town was named after the name of the king Damarla Chennapa Nayak, who was the father of a local leader Venkatapathy Nayak.
The economy of Chennai is growing consistently. The city has progressed greatly in automobile industries, hardware manufacturing, information technology and healthcare industries. Tamil Nadu’s capital Chennai is the hub of automobile industry. The automobile majors like Ashok Leyland and TVS operate from this city. Even cycle giants like TI group also operate from this city. These companies’ corporate offices are located in the central hub of Chennai and the manufacturing operations are located slightly outskirts of the city. In the field of information technology and information technology related services Chennai follows the path just after Bangalore.
In the cultural aspect, Chennai still stands supreme as compared to other regions of India. This city is famous different types of dance and music. Apart from Madras Music Academy there are also different dance classes of various dance forms have been established to promote this form of fine arts.
