Climate of Chennai is seasonal. The location of the city is just on the thermal equator and on the coastal areas of the country; that is why it prevents extreme variation in temperature. Throughout the year Chennai’s climate remain hot and humid. During the months of May and early June the climate remain at its extremity. In the local parlance the climate is known as Agni Nakshtaram (meaning fire star) or Kheitri Veyyil. During the month of January the temperature remains cool. Around January the minimum temperature is around 19 to 20 degree centigrade.

Chennai’s climate is warm and humid during summer and the range of difference in temperature to that of summer is just bare minimum. Best time to enjoy the trip to Chennai is during the months of November to February. Chennai is worst affected when there is a cyclonic depression which gets concentrated in Bay of Bengal.
