Culture of Chennai

Whenever we talk about the culture of Chennai, we term Chennai as the ‘Gateway to the South’. In the cultural aspect different dance forms like Bharat Natyam, Kathakali and other dance forms are cultivated religiously.



In the mid January Pongal is the most popular festival of harvest which in other parts of the country is known as Makar Sankranti. Pongal festival has been designated as the state festival. By celebrating this festival the local Tamilians depict the true picture of Tamil Nadu as a state.

Chennai’s culture also includes traditional form of vocal music. This vocal music has become popular not only in the local circle but also throughout the country and the globe.
