Geography of Chennai

Geography of Chennai has a typicality of its own. The city is located on the South East Coast of India and in the North East Coast of India. There are two main rivers, which flow through the heart of Chennai city. The rivers are Cooum river in the central region and Adyar river on Chennai’s southern part. There is a protected estuary of the river Adyar which has the capacity to gather various species of birds and animals. There is a canal by the name of Buckingham Canal, which moves parallel to the coastal areas and get connected to the two rivers. The Otteri Nullah, a small river running from the east westerly direction passes through North Chennai and gets connected to the Buckingham Canal at Basin Bridge.

As per the Chennai’s geography is concerned there are lot more to write about the subject. There are many lakes, which are situated on the Western hub of Chennai city. The lakes like Red Hills, Sholavaram and Chembarambakkam all supply purified water for the residents of the city.

As regards the geology of Chennai is concerned, mostly there are clay, shale and sandstone. Due to the variation in the geological structure of the Chennai city, it is bifurcated into three distinct regions. These are sandy areas, clayey areas and hard rock areas. Sandy areas are mostly noticeable along the river banks and the coasts, clayey areas noticeable throughout the city and hard rock areas mostly noticeable in Chennai city are Guindy, Velachery, Adambakkam and a part of Saidapet. There are some natural parks located in various parts of Chennai.
