Chennai was originally known as Madras Patnam. It was situated in the Tondaimandalam province. This province was an area between Pennar river of Nellore and Pennar river of Cuddalore. The capital of the province was Kancheepuram. At around 2nd century A.D Tondaimandalam was ruled by Tondaiman IIam Tiryan, who hailed from the Chola family of Kanchipuram. As per the history of Chennai is concerned, we have come to know from the historical records that IIam Tiraiyan controlled Kurumbas , who were the original descendants of the region and started dominating over Tondaimandalam. After that Chennai gradually came into prominence.

As regards Chennai’s history there are more anecdotes available. There is no permanent historical thought based upon the proposition. Anyhow with the passing of time and decades people of Tamil Nadu have accepted some of them.

In the midst of the year 1500, Chennai was in the midst of transitory phase. Portuguese arrived in Chennai in the year 1522. The Portuguese after their arrival in the Chennai city built a port and named it Sao Tome. The Dutch later on occupied the region. The Dutch began their dominance around the year 1612 at Pulicat. As the Dutch were strengthening their supremacy in Pulicat, it was around seventeenth century the British East India Company decided to build a factory on the East coast. The name of the place was Armagon (Dugarazpatnam), a rural area, located far away from Pulicat way back in the year 1626 where the factory was planned to be build.

In the year 1968, the then Madras state was renamed as Tamil Nadu. There were some portions of Andhra Pradesh located in many part of erstwhile Madras state. Later on, when Tamil Nadu was born as an independent state all these places went back to Andhra Pradesh; some shifted to Karnataka and some to Kerala.

Now Madras is no more the capital, Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu. There are various migrants from other parts of the country flocked to Chennai and settled. The migrant’s population also contributed vastly towards the economic development of the city.
