Chennai has a well-developed transportation network. The city and its suburbs are all connected by rail network. The economy of Chennai has developed due to the advancement in transportation network. Arterial roads serve the city and the metropolitan area. Anna Salai or Mount Road is one of the busiest thoroughfares of Chennai. Other arterial roads are Kamraj Salai, Poonamallee High Road, Broadway road and Radhakrishnan Salai.

In Chennai’s transportation network, The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus Network was set up in the year 2001. Metropolitan Transport Corporation operates the Chennai bus services from one part of the city to other part of the city. The city bus services are rated as efficient but during the office hours moist of the buses are always crowded. Apart from the bus service, there is also auto-metered taxi. Private mini bus operators of the city feed the suburbs of the city. Apart from buses, auto taxis and mini buses there are many private individuals who have their own tow wheelers to move out to office and sometimes even go out for marketing along with families.
Despite the abundance of buses, auto taxis and minibuses the railways cover a vast network. The areas are divided into four sections:
Central-Avadi- Arakkonam
Central-Ennore-Gummidipoondi
Beach-Tambaram
MRTS
There is a city airport has international flight connections with different countries of the world. The airport lies slightly outskirts from the city proper and is connected by road and rail transport services.
