This piece of land was given by the Raja of Chandragiri to the East India Company and the Fort St.George got the recognition of James II in 1688. In this context it must be mentioned that the Fort St.George is the oldest municipal corporation for which the Chennai people are still proud of. This building is still the center of the administrative functions of Chennai.
