Fort St.George

If you are really interested in knowing the history of Chennai, one of the major metropolitan cities in India, then, do visit the Fort St.George. The Fort St.George is extremely related to the overall development of Chennai. You can access the Fort very easily as it is located very near to the city center and it is counted as one of the major tourist attractions in Chennai. It is interesting to know the history of the Fort St.George. It was actually built by the East India Company from 1639 to 1640 and it was one of the first English structures in India. Chennai was at that time a small fishing village named Madraspatnam.


This piece of land was given by the Raja of Chandragiri to the East India Company and the Fort St.George got the recognition of James II in 1688. In this context it must be mentioned that the Fort St.George is the oldest municipal corporation for which the Chennai people are still proud of. This building is still the center of the administrative functions of Chennai. Interestingly, this chennai heritage building also houses the State Legislative Assembly of Chennai along with the Secretarial office of the Tamil Nadu government.



You would find the St. Mary's Church within the fort premise. This is the oldest Anglican church in India and thus, it is equally historically significant. This church was built in 1680. You should explore the museum in the fort. The museum exhibits colorful display of costumes, uniforms, coins, weapons, classical items and medals of ancient India. See the massive cannons used by Tipu Sultan at the exterior of the museum. The flagstaff in the Fort St.George is considered to be the tallest one in India. In short, you would get a chance to explore the history of chennai over there.
