The whole structure is actually a fine manifestation of 18th century Pallavan architecture and at the same time it has got a highly historical significance as the Kapaleeshwar Temple is counted as the oldest temple in Chennai city. The Shiva Lingam is the main god of the temple and it is known as Kapaleeshwar. It is interesting to note that Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva has been given the shape of a peacock and in the courtyard, you will be finding the small shrine of peacock worshiping Lord Shiva. And, in the outer courtyard, there is images of about 63 Saivaite saints and the main entrance is decorated with puranic legends inscriptions.
You should visit the Kapaleeshwar Temple during the Arupathu Moovar Vilzha Festival in the months of March and April. During this phase thousands of devotees participate in the 10 day festival as they pay their tribute to the 63 Nayanmars. The processions are highly colorful due to the bronze idols which the worshipers usually carry and this festival has become an integral part of the life of the local community. The event is marked by Koothu dances, street music, folk performances and traditional thoippavai puppet shows.
