National Art Gallery

The National Art Gallery is one of the major tourist attractions in Chennai and it is surely the most appreciated art gallery of Government Museum. Government Museum is a multi purpose state government museum which is located in the central zone of the city, Egmore and it spreads over an area of 16.25 acres land. The Government Museum houses six independent buildings and you will get to see 46 galleries within the museum campus. The National Art Gallery is the most prominent of all. National Art Gallery is the home of Tanjore Painting Gallery, Indian Traditional Art Gallery, Decorative Art Gallery and Ravi Varma Painting Gallery.

The National art Gallery was built in 1907 by T. Namberumal Chetty. The gallery resembles Henry Irwin design and the building is considered to be one of the finest example of Mughal architecture motifs. This is a spectacular pink sandstone building and you would get to see 11th and 12th century Indian handicrafts, 16th and 18th century Mughal and Rajasthani paintings, 17th century Deccan paintings and 10th and 13th century bronzes in the National Art Gallery.
